Day 9: Slipping Sands

Woke up at Jumpinpin and went ashore for a walk. There is a huge sandbar in front of rolling dunes with trees behind. The ocean side is one enormous wild bar. You'd be lucky to get anything other than a fast fishing launch through this. Popular spot for fishers and jet skis.

Nice lump of  driftwood with Sea Change and Cat Play anchored off.

Had chat about the coming weather with Carolyn and Walt. We're expecting strong winds and torrential rain all day tomorrow and partly into Saturday. Jumpinpin is not the place to sit this out, it's far too exposed.

Motored around to Slipping Sands midday. This is on North Stradbroke Island behind a huge sand hill covered in trees and will shelter us from the mostly easterly winds.

Tackled a couple of electrical jobs today.

The house battery on / off switch seems to be stuck in the closed position. This is not really a problem in that the boat still works, it's just that we can't turn it off. I replaced the faulty switch.

Rear of the new house battery switch.

The new house battery switch.
I have a hand-drawn circuit diagram for the battery circuit but I'm not really sure it reflects reality. I made a start on tracing all of the cables through, colour coding them, and drawing them out. It's going to be a big job but I made a start.

There is clearly something wrong with the house battery charging. We have been on longish motors a couple of times now but we're not getting the sort of charge I expect. We're lucky to see over 12.5v after an hour's motoring. That's not right. Tomorrow, I'm going to run some tests on the starboard alternator - this seems the likeliest candidate for the issue. Let's see what the multimeter has to say about it.
