Day 37: Great Keppel Island

Rough start but it all worked out in the end.

The run to Great Keppel is about 5 hours giving us time to play around with the sails a bit. We left the anchorage and hoisted the mainsail. The only useful point of sail for this is a broad reach so I duly set off eastward. As we cleared the Cape, we got clobbered with a side-on 20knots of wind with a steep, short swell. Very uncomfortable. Added to that, the boat was very unbalanced and kept trying to round up. I unfurled the jib to try and get some balance but it really didn't help. By this time, we were getting thrown about and were overpowered. Time to put the toys away.

We turned downwind for the Keppels and ended up with a nice day sail on the foresail alone anchoring in the afternoon. Just chilled out on the boat for the rest of the day - we'll go ashore tomorrow.

Kim making grilled treats under way.

Ran some tests on the port engine to try and diagnose losing RPM under load. Beginning to think the fuel filters may need changing but I would like to run that past Garry first.

Throttle linkage position at Wide Open Throttle (WOT) is the same under load and unloaded, but the RPM is different. Probably not a problem with the linkage.

Dusty, happy to be anchored up.

Great Keppel Island.
